The sex pistols and the rise of punk fashion

The Sex Pistols were an English punk rock band that formed in London in 1975. Their fashion and hairstyles have been credited as a significant influence on punk image, and they are often associated with anarchism within the music. Punk is remembered for its powerful music as it is for the eccentric outfits worn by its members. Designer Vivienne Westwood, whose punk designs for the Sex Pistols helped define the decade’s London style. The bright colored mohawks, piercings, tattoos, leather jackets, tartan, and combat boots came to define an era where conservative governments drove young people to seek expression through rebellion and a defiant attitude against the establishment. Women donned leather skirts and ripped fishnets and many scrawled slogans and band logos on t-shirts with marker pens.

The clothes reflected the music. Punk band The Ramones would command their sharp sound with a new sharp look. They ripped up their jeans, sneakers, and leather completed the look. Their iconic band t-shirt synonymous with teen rebellion is still worn by college kids today.
